Removing car tint from windows

Apply heat to the tint that you want to remove. A heat gun will work best for this process, but a good hairdryer on the highest heat setting can work too. Hold your heat source about two inches away from the glass and apply the heat in circular motions. Do not hold the heat in one spot for too long, and only apply heat to the film you are about to pull away from the window.

Pull slowly while the window tint is warm. The tint should peel away easily. It should also remove most of the glue adhesive off of your car window as the tint film is peeled away. Tint will make your car look better to the opposite sex, protects from the UV rays, and wards off thieves. Removing it however, will make it easier to actually see while driving, sometimes important. Thanks for all of the positive comments.

Steps for removing tinting: 1 Run an extension cord out to your car with plenty left over to reach inside. The key difference will be longer steaming and more scraping with your fingernail. I still do not recommend using a razorblade, but it is up to you. Start on one of the small rear panels who cares about them anyhow 5 Pass the steamer into the car through an open window you can open the door, but then the door ajar chime will go continuously while you listen to music 6 Look closely around the edge of the window you're working on.

You should be able to see the edge of the tint on top of the glass. Once you've found a corner where you can see the tint that is the corner you should start on.

Hold the steamer there for probably a minute or so, just on that corner. Once you've steamed the hell out of the window, Carefully pick at the corner with your fingernail. If it isn't easy to move the tint a little with your fingernail steam some more do not use a razorblade! Do not pull hard! If you pull hard you'll either break the tint and have to start all over, or the whole sheet of tint will come off leaving all of the glue!!!!

You don't want this, you want to bring the glue off with both layers of the tint, so go slowly. If you pull hard at the end you will pull the tint sheet off without bringing the glue with it, then you will have to steam the glue left in the corner and rub it off with a towel annoying.

This way the glue will stick to the towel and come off. If you press too lightly the glue will ball up and fall inside your car, or smear across the window. Worked perfectly if you really pay attention to instructions. If so, you won't have a single problem!!!!!!!!!

Saved money and gave use to my home steamer wrapped in a corner You're idea is right. Just avoid using sharp objects while scraping the adhesives left from the tint. That deep scratch will create bubbles when you put a new tint. This will be helpful for our DIYers. Easily 20 times faster than a razor-blade and ammonia. The only thing I would recommend is definitely keeping all the doors open.

Still, beats having sore fingers from scraping tint and glue off for several hours. Fantastically easy. Took less than an hour to do back door windows and rear sides and only two steamer fills of water. I didn't bother with the tunes or booze and had an assistant pulling the tint film while I steamed. Just me locked in the car with a bottle of Crown Royal and my Steamer.. Blasting my favorite tunes, playing the drums on the steering wheel and singing along off key The neighbors REALLY loved it, infact they all called each other so they could stand in the yard across the street and discuss it before sending the weak one over to ask if I was okay.

Of course I pretended I didn't hear him and kept on steaming to the beat of the music.. As tint fades it also becomes more transparent. State laws are forever evolving and changing. Occasionally a law change will mean that your window tint is no longer considered legal and needs to be removed. In this case, getting off quickly is the best course of action. Doing it at home can end up saving you a lot of money.

Price is a big factor. These two methods tend to make it a lot easier to remove your window tint as well as seriously reducing the amount of glue that gets left behind. Keeping that in mind, all of these methods will work, some might just take a little bit longer to complete. All of these methods require different tools so make sure that you have everything you need before you start. Some of these methods take more time than others. The newspaper and garbage bag methods both require time for the items to bond with the tint.

The hair dryer or steamer technique will probably be your two quickest methods of removal. Take into account the amount of time you have to get the job done. The lines for your defroster lie underneath your tint and are extremely fragile. When you go to remove your window tint you want to keep in mind if your car has these.

Removing them just by pulling the tint like with the soap and scrape method can be dangerous. You could accidentally pull the lines away from the glass. If the lines get pulled away and break then your defrosters will no longer work. In order to minimize this risk, we suggest using the hairdryer or steamer technique. These two allow the tint to be removed without too much pulling.

They also tend not to leave behind any glue. Saving you from having to clean around the lines when you finish. Make sure that your workspace is clean and prepped.

All of your items need to be close by and easily accessible. You may need to quickly switch between them while working. Make sure that you have double-checked that you have all of the necessary tools before beginning. Over time, tint has a tendency to turn a purplish hue.

You may have a combination of adhesive, residue, specs of tint, and even tiny, surface-level scratches. The best method is to purchase some new steel wool. Then, in a bowl, mix together some dish detergent with warm water. Dip the steel wool into the soapy solution and lightly rub the windows. Small circular movements are ideal. Once all adhesive, residue, dirt, and debris has been removed, use glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth to achieve a dry, pristine finish.
