Install window trim wood siding

With Simonton siding and window replacement are no concern because their retrofit windows fit into the existing frame. As originally designed, T1 — 11 siding was made from Softwood plywood. The addition of OSB was made as a cost-cutting measure. But the best T1 — 11 siding is still made of softwood plywood. OSB is much more susceptible water soaking in and swelling the sheet, especially at the edges. A window is installed on a stud wall with or without sheathing before the building wrap is in place.

It is then attached using the nailing fin and integrated with the building wrap using flashing tape. You should put sheeting and house wrap under the T1 — 11 siding, just like with any other siding. Replacing windows when the weather is warm but not too warm, say in late spring or early summer, has several benefits. Repeat the caulking on the side, and run a bead overlapping the bottom trim and going outward to ensure water will run out and not into the window. To be tight to the top of the window, add a little extra siding.

Align your siding to the window frame and nail it in on both sides. And be sure to add caulk underneath the protruding trim to make sure no water leaks in. Cut the horizontal piece to size and snap it in place over the vertical moldings. Before you replace the siding, cut and install new J-channels to prevent water from leaking into your home. Your final step is to reinstall the siding you removed.

Be aware that this may need to be cut to fit around your new trim. If you purchased trim that arrived unfinished, there are two ways to achieve the look you want. But first, make sure the trim has been primed. If you choose to paint one coat prior to installation, make sure the paint is completely dry before you install the new trim. Either way, once you have installed the trim, use spackling compound on any nail holes before painting.

Always use a stain or paint that is exterior grade, especially if your trim is made of wood. These products protect the wood from splitting and cracking over time.
