I uninstalled my existing drivers, and ran the realtek install program in XP SP2 compatibility as administrator. The install did take a few attempts to work - weird things happened with Vista trying to re-install drivers old or new I don't know , and the install program hung on at least one occasion. Also, one time it appeared to work, and then after rebooting there was no sound at all, not even through the internal speakers.

However, I've persisted, and everything now seems fine. I'm still getting sound through speakers and headphones after several reboots so it all seems to have settled in. Control panel still reports no information for the jack, and there are no seperate level controls for the jack but it does respond to the master volume level.
